Doodle Perception

Doodle Perception
by Kimball Barker

I made three replicas of the same doodle and asked people to complete the picture in however way they perceived it. Three subjects were chosen at random and in different locations on campus.
Squiggle= Hair

I was surprised how the first two subjects drew faces onto the doodle. It was interesting to see how something meaningless as a squiggle in the center of a page could mean "hair" (left) or "hat" (below) in some peoples minds.

Squiggle= Hat

After two subjects drew similar drawings, I expected my third to also draw a face, but to my surprise they drew a tree (bottom left). I was excited that they perceived something completely different than the other two, and I think it proves that perception is relative to the viewer.
Squiggle= Tree
