On My Television

Gestalt is a psychology term which means "unified whole.
"It was a term coined in the 1920's by by German psychologists.

This example we have all seen a thousand times.
This NBC logo shows the figure/ground principle where our mind
organizes the figure as a whole for what it is. This
logo does not at all resemble a living peacock, but our
mind can make the connection because of a simple triangle in the
middle of the fanned colors. It also illustrates the
closure principle where we fill in the blanks with our mind. NBC could have
made the white triangle in the middle a different, obvious
 color. But understanding this
gestalt principle, they let our mind do the work.

In this example there are two sets of similar shapes: small
blue boxes and small blue circles. The similar blue circles
seem somewhat out of place when analyzing them
 individually. Yet, our mind groups
them together and creates order due to their similarities.
