Perception #2 Brigham Kmetzsch

When it comes to latinos or Mexicans I always grew up with the perception that were untrustworthy people. There were jokes about how you know a Mexican was your neighbor and the punch line was something like "if your lawn mower was gone and your sister or even your dog was knocked up." Super inappropriate, very one sided and actually not very funny. I think there is a big misperception that Mexican and Latino's are all dangerous gangsters rapists who are uneducated and only work in manual labor jobs.

This first image is highlighting the fact that Mexicans all carry dangerously big knives with them everywhere they go, and we need to watch out. I feel like growing up when we would see latinos or Mexicans at restaurants or something we would just kind of be more cautious when we were around them. But, when I was in working at a landscaping company the summer before I went on my mission I got to know a worker named Etephan and he was one of the hardest workers and skilled workers there, it's because of him that I have a love for Rancharito's. It really opened my eyes to how much they sacrifice for their families by working these jobs every day, it was hard work and he'd been doing it for years.

Because of movies and other sources of media Mexicans are often portrayed as gangsters. They all have their cars with hydraulics and you just don't mess with them cause they might have a big knife or a gun in the car. Sure there might be some Mexicans or Latinos may like this type of car or walk around in wife beaters, but not all do. And I think because it's covered in the news and portrayed in movies that people have come to expect this from this type of person, it's just like anything else with blacks or any other stereotype for that matter. The new Disney movie Zootopia, is awesome at bringing this to light as it portrays the conflicts between the predators and the prey and how all they other animals expected them to act a certain way because of what animal they were.

With all the debates today about immigration in politics, the one story blankets statements can be easily found. Donald Trump specifically has said some things about Mexicans and that is just one story. I think people have this perception because they feel like they can't blame themselves or their own country or people. They feel like the problem lies with someone else and not with themselves, so if they blame them and don't actually look at the real problem and understanding the people who come into this country instead of just assuming some of them are good.

The video I thought was clever cause it was actual people from Mexico responding to what Trump was saying about their country and their people.

  2. I served my mission in Mexico and have a soft spot for Mexicans. Whenever people assign these stereotypes it really stings.

  3. I like that you included video clips of Donald Trump, because I feel like a lot of our stereotypes come from the news and politics. It is sad to see politicians, the people that are suppose to be setting the example for our country, set such a negative example and enforce these stereotypes--that are usually so opposite from how these people really are.

  4. Honestly, you nailed. I watch one summer as a Mexican family reroofed our house. Those guys worked hard, long hours. They knew the meaning of work. My respect for them grew so much as they would joke with me while they were working!

  5. What I think is especially sad about the Donald Trump quote you put is that I've heard people I'm close to say these exact same things. It makes me feel like I have to be ashamed of my heritage because my other relatives, who I've always been closer to than my relatives in Mexico, have such strong opinions. Obviously I'm not ashamed. But it's just sad that people get so stuck on their single stories of people that they refuse to even acknowledge that they're being stereotypical, unfair, and most the times outright wrong. It just brings a divide between me and them that I wish never had to be there.

  6. I like how you included the pictures/quote of Trump because it just proves the dangers of single-storying. It shows that this is a current issue and that it can have widespread, negative consequences.

  7. I have family members who live in Arizona, and they tend to stereotype Mexicans as well. Obviously there are some individuals who are members of gangs and participate in crimes (as you said) but there are white people who do as well! I have met plenty of Mexicans who are great people, and that is what I always have to keep in mind when I see pictures and videos like what you posted above.
