Media often
polarizes the debate of the single story of Muslim refugees. It seems that
there isn’t the moderate ground; instead media asks people if Muslim refugees
will fit in in Western countries. A string of assaults on women on New Year’s
Eve has caused widespread criticism and major concerns in many western
countries as to allowing millions of Syrian refugees to resettle in the country.
Social implications of posts on SNS accelerate the formation of a biased and
negative view of Muslim refugees. The artifacts I collected are depicting all
Muslim refugees as rapist or criminal.
Obviously provocative
headlines and memes are likely to spread undefined or even biased opinion about
the single story of Muslim Refugees. For example, the headline in some article
says, “Muslim Refugees Are Committing This SICK Crime and Getting Away With
It!” The stereotyped press is highly likely to have negative influences on
innocent Muslim refugees such as children who urgently need nutrition and safe
place. The appropriate role of the press is to give unbiased information in
neutral perspective. In an effort to stand neutral, they could say “Male Muslim
refugees,” instead of “Muslim refugees.”
In conclusion,
the media should play a role as a neutral information provider for sound
discussions. The media has obligations to alert people potential crimes that
Muslim refugees may commit in the country. However, the media cannot give any
type of impressions to the public.
I think this single story you've brought up is extremely important for us to understand, because it can lead to the same kind of blind hatred that was found among the Nazis. If we allow ourselves to view an entire religious or cultural group in this narrow minded way, we let a small portion of the group that is bad influence our perception of many good and innocent people.
ReplyDeleteI agree that media should simply inform or alert people. But media is, in its nature, impressionable. I think you mean that media should not give a sided opinion to the public?
ReplyDeleteI agree that the media are obligated to report these crimes and I think that they should also highlight more of the positive news events. News in general is too negative. Spotlighting the positive might help reverse this single story.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your analysis of the media. So true.
