Perception Assignment 2- Hayden Young

All the time I hear how unfair people are treated because of their race, ethnicity, religion or sexual preference. Everyone receives injustices but it's the groups with the loudest mouths that get most of the protection and attention. Am I saying they don't deserve equal treatment? No. I am saying that just because they have dealt with inequality that doesn't mean that they have more rights than others. I have a problem with groups that only advocate one race or ethnicity. Martin Luther King Jr. had a dream that we would all be seem as equals in every way.

We learn in the Book of Mormon that this was intended to be a free land for all and that it would remain free as long as the people are rightous and chose to follow God's commandments. Latin people who cross the boarder are looking for a better life. They are running away from oppression and persecution to embitter their families lives. Just as the pilgrims did hundreds of years ago. They were running away form the Catholic church (Church of England) to be able to worship God how they desired. All they wanted was a better life.

Obviously, in the end the Native Americans ended up losing everything because of it. Why are they not on this list? I feel there are many stereotypes towards them. Growing up in Utah and spending a lot of time near reservations, I never heard a lot of good things from anyone. But every single Native American I have ever met has been sincere and open. So much attention is given to the first three groups because of the media. I fell like everything they report is blown out of proportion and hides a secret agenda, whether good or bad.

So if we are going to talk about minorities and stereotypes. We need to talk about how we treat Native Americans. They are viewed as thieves, lazy, alcoholics, etc. This is only field by media portrayls. They were robbed of more than anyone in this country.

  1. I feel like we even feel sometimes that we have given enough back to them, but going on those reservations is scary. They are so poor, it pretty much traps them. I agree they need to be treated better.

  2. Its fascinating that we could never deport Native Americans so we sectioned off land, effectively keeping them from a shot at the "American Dream" if they want it, because they are raised in a different world, really. Whereas hispanics can beat the system more easily, it seems, even if they come to this country illegally and integrate.

  3. I love when you said "...just because they have dealt with inequality that doesn't mean that they have more rights than others." I agree. I think a lot of those groups you mentioned are advocating a reverse inequality.
