Point of View:
What I like most about changing my typical point of view of something, is the fact that I can notice something new when i'm not expecting it. For instance, I was sitting in class the other day and looked down at my computer because the screen had gone dark. I had had my phone unlocked and on the Snapchat front-facing camera, but just sitting on my computer keys while I was talking to my group about something. When I looked down at my phone, the light structure was reflecting on my dimmed computer screen and my phone's camera was capturing it all. I quickly snapped the pic and was very surprised to see how cool it actually turned out. I had taken pictures of lights from below previously, but never thought to work with the reflection and angle.
Background/subject:
In this image, it's very clear what the subject is - the bathroom sign. I think what makes the subject stand out so evidently here is the clean, light, and simple background. The majority of the space surrounding the image is white or cream - making the blue sign stand out more prominently. The small strip of wood on the side isn't distracting to me because it is in a similar color palette with the cream and white. That's the main thing that makes the subject prominent to me - the color. But also the placing. The sign is in the center of the image - it's where your eyes will look first.
Balance:
It's really interesting looking for balance in unexpected places. For example, the recycling pile in my kitchen that has literally been piling up for months. We don't have a recycling been anywhere close by, so we rarely take the recycling out; it just piles up for months. What's interesting, is something so common (and seemingly embarrassing) can be turned into art. After I took this photo, I realized there's some real beauty in it. The lines of the photo - for one. Also the amount of color on one side being balanced out by the simple white on the other. The darkness in the middle creates a nice, equal divide to the photo as well. Looking at the piles of recycling alone was so chaotic - color everywhere and shapes and different textures. But when you add another element, everything changed and the chaos went away and the photo became more peaceful than the actual pile itself.
