Modern Family clip - Mitchell and Cam get married

The LGBTQ community is a very small minority with a very loud voice. The single story that is portrayed through these artifacts is that being a member of the LGBTQ community is liberating, but very challenging. When people decide to accept that they are different from the norm and publicly address their sexuality they feel freed. However, the LGBTQ community is full of motivating messages and support, because members of the community feel that they have had to fight for equal rights and respect.

This portrayal of the LGBTQ community is limiting because it only shares one story. Among the community their are people who have received an immense amount of support from their friends and family. There are also those who don't feel freed by their coming out, but rather feel that they have been put into a box that they will never escape. Each individual has a different story to tell, and in lumping them all together we lose some of the vital experiences and opinions of those who have a different story to tell.

Each of these three artifacts depicts a different type of member of the LGBTQ community. Caitlin Jenner is a transgender woman who has become a public figure for transgender people everywhere. Her influence on the LGBTQ community has been huge because the world watched her entire life from being a male olympian to struggling to become a woman. The Modern family clip depicts a different struggle with it's narrative about a couple who has fought to get married and receive equal rights. The last article is about a bisexual woman that married a man and now feels like an outsider in the LGBTQ community. Each story outlines a struggle that the person had to go through which is why the LGBTQ community has been given that single story.

  1. I think you did a good job of finding a variety of different examples. I read the article you posted and it was interesting hearing a different side of the story. Once again, it helped me to not just one-story a group of people (bis) but to be open and learn about it from their point of view.

  2. Interesting to consider that dealing with same-sex attraction and transgender situations does not necessarily equal challenges and hardship. That is a single story I hadn't stopped to consider before.
