Perception #2

I found this article talking about stereotypes of people with disabilities and I found it extremely eye-opening. It takes a few well-known stereotypes and breaks them. The single story for individuals with disabilities is that they are not "whole" people and that they lead a life of sorrow all day every day and they are not capable of doing most things that "normal humans" can do.

I really liked this youtube clip because it talked about the history of disabled actors/characters in film. There is definitely a single story people with disabilities because many films and televisions shows have ingrained these stereotypes in the minds of the viewers. They make it seem like a reality. In many tv shows and movies there is a disabled character that is sad because of their disability and then in comes the able-bodied character to help them make their life "less miserable" and save the day. When the reality is that that disabled person may not be miserable but completely happy with their
life and may not need help at all.

Victims cartoon CrippenAnother piece of media I found was this comic. The creator of this comic, makes a lot of comics about people with disabilities that sarcastically comment on the stereotypes that many people have of them. This one underlines the notion of disabled people always needing help but even if able-bodied people help them their lives are still "pathetic or sad" because of their disability. Because of this single story that many of us have about people with disabilities it limits them. We are putting these limitations on them because we believe they can't do something, we underestimate them because we think we know what is best, however it is not the case.
