Bull on Wall Street

With is bent limbs and chiseled muscles this bull is caught in action- posing with powerful aggression and strength. The sharp horns, flared nostrils, flailing tail, and narrowed eyes all suggest the heightened emotional state of the bull as it begins a forward charge. As I look at the bull, I see it caught in the middle of aggressive movement and find it somewhat intimidating.

This statue was created in the wake of the 1987 stock market crash and placed in the middle of New York's financial district. It symbolized to the American people and the world, the strength, power and resiliency of the stock market- despite the negative challenges that presented themselves. It referenced the idea of a "bull" market- or a market that is favorable for trade and enterprise- indicating an optimistic and confident response to an adverse economic situation.

When viewing this bull during a strong economic period, connotations of strength and power will probably be interpreted. Economic prosperity is a powerful and moving force that will take on anything in its way. However, during times of economic struggle, this bull may possibly be viewed more with connotations of lack of control, danger, and harmful agression. Businesses, like the bull when faced with challenges will lower their horns and fight for their livelihoods.
