Gestalt Theory

So our ward just recently began doing TennisTinder (think of that nike app we talked about in class last week, combined with Tinder and a ward date box).

The Gestalt principles used in this design are proximity, figure/ground and similarity. While the figure/ground (the T's) probably isn't the most effective, it adds emphasize to the letters size and shape and calls attention to the tennis ball and the Tinder logo, two symbols key for understanding and interpreting this image. The yellow coloring of the letters T creates the perception as if the tennis ball and tinder logo had cut outs or contained that figure within each image.

Similarity is demonstrated by the repeated symbol of tennis rackets. The viewer can easily recognize the similar nature and positioning of these images and the mind recognizes them as belonging together because of their identical charactersitcs. This also allows the viewer to see the groupings of tennis rackets and not just have to look at each racket individually to know what it the image is.

The proximity of the images contrasted to the proximity of the letters helps organize the image in such a way that the viewer can seperate the areas of the design that are intended to be percieved as words and text and those areas not containing language. This helps to direct the reader's eye as they process the information being communicated.
