Semiotics Analysis 1




The signifier above is a bronze statue of a bull. This New York City landmark near Wall Street signifies power, strength and confidence.  The animal itself is known for its natural strength, defiance and determination. With his mouth open and his nostrils flared, the bull breathes heavily as he focuses his eyes on the target. He leans to one side, seemingly dodging obstacles in his way as his strong whip-like tail slices the wind. With his muscles defined, his stance is just a hesitation before he breaks out into a full fledged sprint at any moment. Any citizen not aware of the context of the bull's location could interpret the bull to be simply an interesting statue while in reality, the bull is an icon for the nation's economy. A "bull" in this context is an investor who believes that the stock market will rise; the "bull" is the optimist. Investors who take a bull approach will purchase stocks under the assumption that they can be sold later at a higher price. 

Knowing this context, we understand that the bull represents the optimism of the stockbrokers on Wall Street. He is a symbol of the approach they might take that the economy will push forward. The stock brokers resonate with the bull's power, strength and confidence.  He represents their determination, their audacity in taking risks and the power and strength that comes from monetary success.
