Semiotics #1




The signifier is a statue of a charging bull. It signifies financial optimism in the US and a healthy economy. Also, to small business owners, it signifies a threat to their livelihoods. Supporting this analysis is its location in front of the New York Stock Exchange and the current bullish sentiment on Wall Street, brought about by a sustained upward trend in stock prices. Also supporting it is the fear shared by many small business owners today that they will be crushed or trampled under the uncaring hooves of big bully corporations.
