Our reading assignment, "What is Creativity? -- Creativity Is a Quality," states, "Whatsoever you do, if you do it joyfully, if you do it lovingly, if your act of doing it is not purely economical, then it is creative." As I was walking across campus after class on Thursday, I realized that all of the people I passed looked extremely bored, sad, or even annoyed. They were probably walking the shortest path to their destinations, in a way that would conserve as much of their energy as possible. I realized that my fellow students and I were walking to/from class with the attitude that we had to, because it was a necessary (and rather unenjoyable) chore.
But then I wondered what would happen if I decided that I was walking to class because I wanted to, simply because I enjoyed it? What if, instead of walking, I actually skipped to class? So yesterday, I made my walk across campus joyful. I skipped to my first class, smiling all the way there. As a result, my journey to class was faster, more enjoyable, and a lot more creative than walking. And who knows? Maybe I made someone else smile too.
